For decades, Ida Applebroog has recorded text—outbursts, observations—as well as personal illustrations in her journals and sketchbooks. This sugar lift aquatint, made in an edition of 25, is the product of a process that involved digitally scanning Applebroog’s drawings from the 1970s, overlapping various scenes, and transferring the composite image to a printing plate. The end effect is blueprint-like and has been printed on Hahnemühle Bugra paper, a material that naturally looks aged and thus reflects the drawings’ history. Regarding the ambiguous subject matter vividly portrayed in these storyboard images, Applebroog says: “They're like Rorschachs. You can show five different people the same thing, and everyone will see something different. You say, ‘drowning.’ She says, ‘saving;’ ‘rescue.’ Everyone sees something different in ink blots.”
