About The Work
Produced exclusively for Fire Island Artist Residency, this edition of photographs is part of Mickalene Thomas’ ongoing subversion of the classical portrait genre of the female nude. Contrasting the coy white nudes and timeless backdrops that populate art history, Thomas’ muses are African American women in intimate household settings decorated in styles specific to the 1970s culture of the artist’s childhood. Here, the feminine subject, dressed in flowers and holding a bouquet, meets the voyeur’s eyes in a expression of sexual confidence.
