About The Work

By the end of 1983, Sherman was already a rising art world superstar. She had only been exhibiting for less than five years, yet had already had solo shows across the United States and Europe including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. This work, a rare and seemingly unadorned portrait, followed on the heels of two of her greatest projects, the Untitled Films Stills and the Centerfolds (for Artforum). The fact that the image is situated in her "studio" is clearly foreshadowing. In 1985 Sherman begins her polemic and nightmarish "Fairy Tales", followed by several other bodies of work that are realized in her studio.

In this gentle image, the artist, with her slightly sarcastic smile, seems to be saying farewell as she shortly after disappears behind prosthetics, freaky masks, fake vomit and elaborate historical wigs. Sherman seems to be taunting the viewer to take a last good look at her before she becomes unrecognizable.

Because of the importance of this work in the historical context of her oeuvre, it has become highly sought after on the secondary market.
