About The Work

Here, esteemed West Coast Pop artist Ed Ruscha playfully upends the genre of self-portraiture. Here, he not only foregoes the category’s traditional straight-on depiction of the face or body (depicting instead his own forearm), but also includes images separated by more than 50 years, though there is little evidence of aging. The two similarly executed photographs call to mind the latent humor and stark imagery of Ruscha’s photo books, such as Twentysix Gasoline Stations, despite the expected intimacy of a self-portrait.
