About The Work
Pablo Picasso executed his 347 Series (to which this erotically charged etching belongs) toward the end of his life and within the swift timeframe of seven months. The various 347 prints depict a range of icons and cultural references, childhood memories, painters with their models, and time periods. In this case, the male figure—he is seemingly plucked from the 17th century—appears beside a provocatively posed courtesan. Executed in a limited edition of 30, this print is from one of Picasso’s most sought-after suites, La Célestine, and demonstrates the Modernist’s pared-down representation, playfully reconstructing—even perverting—the venerable historical canon.
